Form 14611 In Response to EGT Transcript Request Not Scam

Tax Notes reports that Catherine Hughes, attorney-adviser, Treasury Office of Tax Legislative Counsel, speaking at the ABA Tax Section’s Mid Year meeting, noted that practitioners have been wary of Form 14611, which many practitioners have received in response to requests for transcripts of estate and gift tax returns, but she assured them the form is legitimate and not a scam.

According to Tax Notes “The service has started restricting its use of tax ID numbers on mailings that they send out for identity theft purposes, so that’s why that form does not have a complete taxpayer ID on it,” Hughes said. The IRS issues Form 14611 in response to Form 4506-T, “Request for Transcript of Tax Return,” when specific identity theft indicators are present.
