The New York Times has published an article by Ron Lieber titled "Seeking Investment Flexibility In a 401(k)." In his article, Mr. Lieber discusses ways to improve plans through self-directed options, also known as a brokerage or mutual fund window, where participants can buy any mutual or exchange-traded fund they choose.
