Elder Law Answers recently posted an article titled "New Approach Reduces Unwanted Medical Treatments at End of Life." The article argues that advance directives are not consistently followed and often have little impact on end-of-life decisions and recommends the use of Physicians Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment (POLST). POLST is an alternative to advance directives that uses a standardized medical order form where a patient can indicate specifically which types of life-sustaining treatments the patient wants or does not want if their condition worsens.
