The New York Law Journal
has posted Matter
of Flamenbaum, which was decided on March 30, 2010. The Vorderasiatisches Museum of the Federal Republic of Germany
filed a claim against Riven Flamenbaum for the return of an ancient gold tablet, discovered during archaeological excavations in
1913 in the Ottoman Empire, which was later found in a safe deposit box in Great Neck, New York. The court denied the claim based on the doctrine of laches, which is "an equitable defense based on an unreasonable delay by a victim in
bringing a claim, which in turn causes prejudice to the possessor."
