Senators Seek to Index Estate Tax Exemption Levels to Inflation

Tax Notes has published an article by Chuck O'Toole, reporting on a possible upcoming conflict between House and Senate versions of the new estate tax bill.  Senate Finance Committee Chair Max Baucus, D-MT, and Budget Committee Chair Kent Conrad, D-ND, have stated this week that they wish to extend the estate tax exemption at the 2009 levels and index the rate to inflation.  However, the House version of the bill currently under consideration would only permanently extend the 2009 estate tax and would not index the estate tax exemption levels to inflation.
